David Leen	751c7eb0cc	Fix asyncio error when opening notebooks This is a fix for https://github.com/jupyter/notebook/issues/6164 `nest_asyncio` must be applied before any async tasks have been created otherwise there could be tasks queued that are unpatched, and thus do not respect nested loops. An example of an unpatched task can be seen in the original issue: ``` <Task pending coro=<HTTP1ServerConnection._server_request_loop() running at /apps/python3/lib/python3.7/site-packages/tornado/http1connection.py:823> ``` which originates from Tornado. A similar issue was reported in `nest-asyncio`: https://github.com/erdewit/nest_asyncio/issues/22 where the solution is to call `apply` on import so that unpatched tasks do not get created.	4 years ago

Matt Riedemann	1929fb53b8	Add support for JSON formatted logs This adds a new extra package dependency on `json-logging` and an environment variable, which when set to "true" regardless of case, will try to use the json-logging non-web app log formatter. If the `json-logging` package is not installed but the environment variable is True, something like this will be logged but it will not crash the application: ``` $ ENABLE_JSON_LOGGING=true jupyter notebook Unable to use json logging due to missing packages. Run "pip install notebook[json-logging]" to fix. Traceback (most recent call last): File "/home/osboxes/jupyter/notebook/notebook/notebookapp.py", line 144, in <module> import json_logging ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'json_logging' ``` Initially I tried to add a new Bool config option to toggle this but the problem is (from my limited understanding of traitlets and tornado) is that `_log_formatter_cls` needs to be set early and trying to se the log formatter later in `init_logging` is too late - or at least I couldn't figure out a way to reset the log formatter dynamically (I tried calling `_log_format_changed` [1] but that didn't work). The `json-logging` library supports several web frameworks like Flask but unfortunately does not have built in support for Tornado, but it does support custom formatters so that might be a follow up option to improve on this. Kevin Bates	499740b4bb	Bump minimum version of jupyter_core (#5170 ) Since there's a 6.0.3 release brewin', I thought we should bump the minimum version of jupyter_core from 4.6.0 to 4.6.1. The latter has an edge case to the slew of secure_write issues that would be very annoying if NB 6.0.3 didn't upgrade to that version. The edge case is to tolerate the owner-execute bit on the connection file, which occurs when RUNTIME_DIR resides on certain filesystem types (e.g., CIFS).	6 years ago

Adding this to the Jupyter notebook server allows us to instrument the code easily and in a standard format that has lots of 3rd party tooling for it. This commit does the following: - Introduce the `prometheus_client` library as a dependency. This library has no dependencies of its own and is pure python. - Add an authenticated `/metrics` endpoint to the server, which returns metrics in Prometheus Text Format - Expose the default process metrics from `prometheus_client`, which include memory usage and CPU usage info (for just the notebook process)	8 years ago
